The Cradlepoint CTR350 is an entry level router, it will manage up to 16 Wifi connections, and has an RJ45 ethernet port that can function as LAN (outgoing) or a WAN (incoming). It accepts most current USB aircards/modems.
The Cradlepoint PHS300 has an internal battery that will operate the router for 2 hours or so while not connected to external power. Great for someone that needs connectivity for short periods whilst away from shore power. This unit also works well as an in-car hotspot, the battery smooths out the resets as the vehicle starts and stops. It is strictly a USB in and WiFi out device, with no RJ45 ethernet port connectivity.
The CTR500 is a newer addition to the Cradlepoint line, it will work with USB and Express card modems. It has a selectable RJ45 for WAN or LAN, a signal strength indicator for the aircard, and a switch to turn the WiFi off when not in use. It also has a port for an optional external WiFi antenna which increases range about 35%. It has the ability to balance two aircards,
WiFi range on all the above routers is between 40-125 feet.
The MBR1000 is a top of the line N band (Wireless range on N band over 1000 feet) and has 4 dedicated LAN (outgoing) and one dedicated WAN (incoming). It has 2 USB inputs and also will accept an Express card. This router can fail over from input to input, or will do a form of load balancing amongst the aircards. Due to the external antenna array we see G band Wifi range from 75 to 200 ft. It also has an On/Off WiFi switch, and it powers natively from 12 volts, which makes it very popular with the RV crew.
The Kyocera KR2, was built by Cradlepoint on the MBR1000 platform. It has essentially the same features and functions but has an additional slot to support PCMCIA modems. The white coloration (including the antennas) sets it apart from the black Cradlepoint version. The KR2 is no longer being manufactured, so availability is limited. That coupled with firmware updates no more frequent than 6 months or so, causes us to recommend it only in very specialized cases.
The MBR1100 is virtually indentical to the MBR1000, but it supports end to end VPN (up to 5 tunnels) and also supports more 4G aircards than any other router.
The MBR800 is a non-wifi router. It comes in the same housing as the other MBR routers from Cradlepoint but without the antennas. It has the same inputs and capabilities, but supports only the four Ethernet ports for output connectivity. We supply these units to a lot of businesses and agencies that simply cannot chance the security risk of WiFi.
